The GirlsMatter Club of Lawton

We watched an episode of Oprah in which she discussed women in Africa who had Fistulas, The closing of the show was Oprah making the following statement:

"If you are a girl born in the United States, You are already one of the luckiest girls in the world." We discussed the power behind this statement and the girls wrote how they felt about being a girl in the US.

If you are a girl born in the USA you are already one of the luckiest girls alive because you can go to school. You can also vote. In some countries when you are about eight or nine, you are already married and pregnant. In the USA we are allowed to just be kids. That's why if you were born in the USA you are one of the luckiest girls alive. -- Cecilia

I am lucky because I can dress any way I want. I can be whatever I want to be when I grow up and I can go to the doctors when I am sick. -- Casey

I am lucky to be born in America because I have freedom to make my own decisions. I can make my own choices about my clothes and who I want to marry and when and if I want to have babies and when. I am able to stay clean and defend myself. This is why I think I am lucky to be born in America. -- 5th grader

I am happy to be born in America because you don't have to be forced into doing anything you don't want to do. It's a free country and freedom is what the statue of liberty stands for. You can do anything you want to do here. You can live your life the way you want to, that's why I think I am one of the luckiest girls alive. -- Rahdyah

I am proud to be an American woman because I can speak up for myself. I can also walk out of the house whenever I feel like it without being escorted by a man. I can wear whatever I want. I am proud to be an American woman! -- Christina

The GirlsMatter Club members sign in to cast their ballot for the CORE members on a real voting machine. Every member of the club turned out to vote because they all believe that their vote makes a difference. This was an important experience for the girls because now we know what is like to really vote. We also voted on a resolution to support or not support the school budget. Our vote turned out to match the public vote. Click here for more.
